Positive Self-Talk
Be your own cheerleader to play your A game
Talk yourself up to perform better
Are you your own worst critic – finding fault in everything you do? Not strong enough, not doing enough, not good enough. Can you imagine saying any of that to a friend, a family member, or a work colleague? No, it would make them feel rubbish. So why speak like that to yourself?
Positive self-talk – which basically means turning the inner critic into a positive, encouraging voice – is a powerful Mental Fitness strategy. It’s used a lot in sport, to ensure a winning frame of mind during training and big game days.
What to do
Try to take notice of how you react and talk to yourself when you get up in the morning. Do you find faults? When you’re faced with a challenge, do you say it’s too hard or do you tell yourself you can do it? Try being your own coach, best friend, cheerleader. It might take practise but it can make a huge difference not just to how you feel about yourself but how you perform.
