Distraction Techniques

Get yourself out of a negative rut

Quick ways to shift your mindset

People often think being distracted is a bad thing. But distracting yourself isn’t letting yourself off the hook or avoiding the problem. It can be a useful way to give yourself a break from overthinking. Distraction forces you to re-set and get your thoughts out of a negative cycle. Sometimes a ten minute distraction will be enough to course-correct your negative thoughts. Other times it’s an effective short term break but you might need to chat to someone as well to find a longer term solution.

Options to consider

Think about things you can do to shift your mindset. It needs to be something you find absorbing so it could be watching TV, going for a run, reading, chatting to a friend, making a new music playlist or playing a game. Whatever works for you, try and get yourself out of a rut and give yourself a break. Distracting yourself is worth a try and often works.
